Fire takes Moyock Baptist Church
The Coastland Times (May 7, 1996)

An early morning blaze destroyed Moyock Baptist Church yesterday, a fire that is thought to have started when the church was struck with lightning, according to a spokesperson for Moyock Fire Department.

While the main building, the sanctuary, was destroyed, firemen were able to save the connecting buildings that contained classrooms, meeting rooms and kitchen. Those areas, however, did sustain a degree of smoke and water damager.

The call came in to the fire station, located only around the corner from the church, at 3:08 a.m. While there are several churches in the Moyock community, the red brick Moyock Baptist sat on Church Street, just off NC 168, on the easterly side of the railroad tracks.

Damage estimates were still being assessed at press time.

The blaze marks the second time in only two years that a Currituck Community has lost its church accientally to fire. Ground breaking ceremonies were just held last weekend to mark the rebuilding of the Poplar Branch Baptist Church in Grandy that was destroyed by fire in June 1994.
