Train, truck accident kills 2 Moyock men
The Daily Advance (Date Unknown)

MOYOCK - Two Moyock men were killed shortly after noon Tuesday in a collision between a small pickup truck and a train.

Timothy Michael Temple, 28, of Wedgewood Lakes, Moyock, was killed when his 1987 Ford pickup was struck in the passenger side by a train at a railroad crossing on state Route 1222 (Shingle Landing Road). Charles Cecil Quinn Jr., 17, of Baxter Grove Road, Moyock, who was a passenger in the truck, was also killed.

"The only thing we can tell right now is that the truck did not stop at the tracks," said state Highway Patrol Trooper C.R. Hailey, who is investigating the accident. "We have witnesses who say that the train whistle blew. The witnesses said the truck was traveling about 30 miles per hour. The train hit the front end on the passenger side and spun it around."

Jim R. Davis, general manager for Chesapeake & Albemarle Railroad Co., which owns the train, said the train was also traveling at about 30 mph. The train was hauling freight from Elizabeth City to Norfolk, Va.

"From what the engineer said (Temple) never stopped, never looked," Davis said. "there were no skid marks to indicate that he even tried to stop."

"This is the last thing in the world we want to happen," he added.

There are no warning lights at the railroad tracks, but there is an advance warning sign further up the road and a railroad "crossbucks" sign at the tracks. The tracks emerge from woods just a few feet from the intersection.

David Sawyer, who lives near the accident site, was the first person at the scene.
